
How Often Should RCDs Be Tested in WA?

An RCD can sit quietly in a switchboard for years, yet it is one of the most important safety devices in a property. So, how often should RCDs be tested? For most homes, the practical answer is every six months using the built-in test button. Workplaces, rental properties and high-risk sites can have additional requirements, so the correct interval depends on where the RCD is installed and what it protects.
An RCD, or residual current device, is designed to disconnect power quickly when it detects current flowing where it should not, such as through a person or to earth through damaged wiring. It does not prevent every electrical incident, but a working RCD provides critical protection against electric shock and electrical fire risks.
How often should RCDs be tested at home?
Homeowners should press the test button on each RCD at least every six months. This is a simple functional check that helps confirm the mechanism can trip.
Start by saving any work on computers, checking that appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers are not mid-cycle, and warning others in the house that the power may go off. At the switchboard, identify the RCDs. They are usually marked with a test button labelled “T” or “Test”. Press the button firmly.
The RCD should immediately switch to the off or tripped position and cut power to the circuits it protects. Reset it by moving the switch fully off if required, then back on. Some switchboards have combined safety switch and circuit breaker devices, known as RCBOs. These should be tested in the same way.
Testing every six months is sensible for owner-occupied homes even where there is no formal routine-testing record to maintain. Put a recurring reminder in your mobile calendar, ideally at easily remembered points such as the start of daylight saving changes elsewhere in Australia or at the beginning of autumn and spring. Western Australia does not observe daylight saving, so choose dates that suit your household routine.
What if the RCD does not reset?
Do not keep forcing it back on. A failed reset can mean the RCD itself is faulty, an appliance has developed a fault, or there is an issue in the fixed wiring.
Unplug appliances on the affected circuit where it is safe to do so, then try resetting the device once. If it still will not reset, leave it off and arrange a licensed electrician. If it resets but trips again when a particular appliance is plugged in or switched on, stop using that appliance until it has been assessed or repaired.
A test button check is not a substitute for professional testing. It confirms that the trip mechanism operates, but it does not measure whether the RCD trips within the required time or at the correct leakage current.
RCD testing in WA rental properties
In Western Australia, rental properties must have the required RCD protection in place before a tenancy begins. For landlords and property managers, checking that the installed devices operate is a sensible part of property maintenance, particularly between tenancies and during routine inspections.
The six-month test-button routine remains a useful baseline. However, landlords should not rely on a tenant’s test alone as proof that an installation is safe or compliant. Older switchboards, recent renovations, nuisance tripping, damaged covers, missing circuit labels or uncertainty about RCD coverage are all good reasons to arrange a licensed electrician’s inspection.
A property with an RCD does not necessarily have every circuit protected. In older homes, the extent of protection can vary. A qualified electrician can identify what the RCDs cover, assess the switchboard condition and advise on practical upgrades where needed.
Workplace RCD testing is more structured
Business owners have a stronger duty to manage electrical risks. In offices, retail spaces, workshops and other workplaces, portable electrical equipment and RCDs may need testing and tagging in line with the environment, the equipment type and applicable safety requirements.
As a general guide, push-button testing of workplace RCDs is commonly carried out every six months. Portable RCDs and equipment used in harsher environments may require more frequent checks. Construction, demolition and mining environments have particularly strict testing arrangements because cords, tools and leads face greater wear, moisture and physical damage.
Instrument testing by a competent person is also required at intervals appropriate to the site and equipment. This test measures trip time and trip current rather than simply checking whether the switch moves. The interval may differ between a low-risk office, a commercial kitchen, a workshop and a construction site.
Rather than applying one rule across every business, review the actual risk. Equipment used outdoors, around water, in dusty conditions or where leads are regularly moved deserves closer attention than a fixed computer workstation in a clean office. Keep records of tests, repairs and replacements so there is a clear maintenance history if an incident occurs.
When should a licensed electrician test an RCD?
A homeowner can perform the routine test-button check, but electrical fault-finding, repair and instrument testing must be left to a licensed electrician. Arrange professional attention promptly if an RCD:
does not trip when the test button is pressed
will not reset after tripping
trips repeatedly without an obvious cause
feels loose, damaged or unusually warm
has been exposed to water, storm damage or pest damage
is part of an older switchboard with unclear labelling or limited protection.
Professional RCD testing uses specialist equipment to confirm the device disconnects within the required limits. An electrician can also investigate whether nuisance tripping comes from a faulty appliance, deteriorated wiring, moisture ingress, an overloaded circuit or a failing RCD.
This distinction matters. Repeatedly resetting a tripping RCD can mask a fault rather than solve it. The temporary inconvenience of leaving a circuit off is preferable to restoring power to a potentially unsafe condition.
A practical testing routine for Perth properties
For a straightforward home routine, test each RCD every six months and note the date inside the switchboard door or in a household maintenance log. Make sure other adults in the home know where the switchboard is and what an RCD trip looks like.
For landlords, include RCD checks in the maintenance plan and obtain professional advice when changing appliances, undertaking renovations or managing an older property. For businesses, establish an RCD and electrical equipment testing schedule that reflects the workplace risk, then keep the records current.
Perth properties can also face conditions that affect electrical installations, including heat, storm activity, moisture around outdoor areas and ageing wiring in established homes. There is no need to test an RCD after every storm if everything is operating normally, but a visual check and a professional inspection are worthwhile after water ingress, significant storm damage or any electrical incident.
RCD testing is only one part of electrical safety
A functioning RCD works alongside properly installed wiring, correctly rated circuit protection, safe appliances and sensible everyday use. It should never be treated as permission to use damaged extension leads, overloaded power boards or appliances with frayed cords.
Keep switchboards accessible, ensure circuits are clearly labelled and avoid covering or storing items against electrical equipment. If renovations are planned, ask the electrician whether the existing switchboard and RCD coverage are suitable for the additional circuits. This is especially relevant when adding air conditioning, solar equipment, an EV charger, a pool or new outdoor power.
If you are unsure when your RCDs were last tested, press the test button when it is safe to do so. If anything does not operate as expected, leave the affected circuit off and have a licensed electrician assess it. A small, regular check is one of the simplest ways to keep an electrical safety device ready for the moment it is needed.
