What Causes Circuit Breaker Tripping at Home?

A breaker that trips once may have done exactly what it was designed to do. A breaker that keeps tripping is a warning that should not be ignored. Understanding what causes circuit breaker tripping can help you respond safely, protect appliances and know when a licensed electrician is needed.

At the switchboard, different protective devices may be fitted. A circuit breaker protects wiring from excessive current, while a safety switch, also called an RCD, detects electricity leaking to earth. Many newer homes use RCBOs, which combine both functions. The cause of a trip depends on which device has operated and what was happening on the circuit at the time.

What causes circuit breaker tripping?

The most common causes are an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, an earth leakage fault or a problem with an appliance. Less obvious issues, such as water ingress, deteriorated wiring or a fault in an outdoor circuit, can also be responsible.

A protective device is not an inconvenience to be bypassed. It has interrupted power because it has detected a condition that could damage the electrical installation, create a fire risk or expose someone to electric shock. Resetting it without considering the cause can turn a useful warning into a more serious problem.

Overloaded circuits

An overload occurs when too many appliances are drawing power from the same circuit. This is common in older homes, garages, kitchens and home offices where the available circuits may not suit how the space is now used.

For example, a kettle, toaster, air fryer and coffee machine running from outlets supplied by one kitchen circuit can exceed its capacity. In a garage, a welder, compressor or electric heater may trip a circuit that was originally intended for lighter use. Earth leakage can be caused by failing appliance insulation, moisture in an outdoor fitting, damaged cabling, an ageing hot-water system, a dishwasher, a washing machine or a refrigerator. It can also develop intermittently, which is why a circuit may hold when tested at one time but trip during rain, overnight or when a particular appliance starts its cycle.

A safety switch that will not reset should be treated seriously. Do not keep forcing it back on. The fault may be on a fixed circuit, in an appliance that is still plugged in, or within the switchboard itself.

Appliances that can trigger a trip

An appliance is often the cause, but it is worth narrowing this down carefully rather than guessing. Heating elements, motors and older flexible leads are frequent sources of faults. Appliances used around water or outdoors deserve particular attention.

Common examples include:

  • kettles, toasters and sandwich presses with worn elements or internal moisture

  • washing machines, dryers and dishwashers with ageing heating components

  • refrigerators and freezers with compressor or defrost faults

  • portable heaters, air conditioners and power boards drawing excessive load

  • pool pumps, garden equipment and outdoor lights exposed to weather

If a breaker or safety switch trips shortly after one appliance is connected or switched on, unplug that appliance and leave it out of service. Do not continue using it simply because it works sometimes. Intermittent electrical faults can worsen with heat, vibration or moisture.

Water, weather and outdoor electrical faults

2. Check whether there are obvious signs of damage, moisture, overheating or a burning smell. Do not use any item that appears damaged.

4. Reconnect appliances one at a time, allowing time between each, to see whether one item causes the trip.

5. If the device trips again, will not reset, or trips with everything unplugged, leave it off and contact a licensed electrician.

Do not hold a breaker in the on position, repeatedly reset it, replace a breaker yourself or use extension leads to work around a failed circuit. These actions can defeat the protection built into the installation and make diagnosis more difficult.

When the fault is likely to be in the fixed wiring

If the breaker trips with all appliances disconnected, the issue may be in the fixed electrical installation. Possible causes include damaged cables, loose terminations, a failed power point or light fitting, water ingress, pest damage, or a fault connected to hard-wired equipment such as an oven, air conditioner, hot-water unit or pool system.

Recent building work can be relevant too. Drilling into walls, installing shelving, fitting blinds or completing renovations can accidentally damage concealed cable. Even if the trip begins days later, mention recent work when booking an electrician.

A qualified electrician will test the affected circuit, inspect relevant accessories and isolate sections of the installation where required. This approach identifies the source of the fault without relying on trial and error.

Why repeated tripping needs prompt attention

A tripping breaker is not always an emergency, but repeated trips should be investigated promptly. The risk depends on the cause. A simple overload may be resolved by changing appliance use or upgrading the circuit. A short circuit, damaged cable or earth leakage fault can create a much greater safety concern.

Call for urgent electrical assistance if there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, heat at a power point or switchboard, visible damage, electric shocks or water affecting electrical equipment. Keep people away from the area and do not attempt further resets.
